Judo Secrets Letter

A letter for the judoka and his or her parents full of secrets and facts about Judo and the Judo lessons.

What you need to know

Because Judo comes from Japan, it goes without saying that you sometimes come across Japanese names. For example, a judo room is called a DOJO (this is the place you are NEVER allowed to enter with your shoes on, the mat in the dojo is called a TATAMI and your judo suit is called a JUDOGI (don't forget it).

The New Gentle Way rules..

Of course, everyone should know that you have to behave properly during judo lessons and that you are not allowed to have a big mouth to each other and to the Sensei (the master). These are not the only rules that exist in judo. In the following section you can read what you should pay attention to before you start the judo lesson. If you want to be a real judoka, you have to behave like a real judoka.

Respect

Greeting each other in judo is done by bowing to the other. This shows the other person your respect. First, you promise each other that you won't hurt each other on purpose. You also promise that you will help each other in order to get the best out of yourself and the other. Rei is the translation from Japanese for making a greeting, it means something like showing that you have complete trust in the person you are practicing with.
Not only do you make a bow at the beginning of each exercise, when the master has called Mate then you end your exercise or competition with a bow, we call this saluting.

Hygiene
Hands and feet..

You can recognize a judoka by his HANDS and FEET. His NAILS are just like the rest of his body, nice and clean. This means: cut short and without dirty black edges. Long nails are like razor blades and can easily injure other judoka's. If you happen to suffer from warts or eczema, you should wear a clean sock during judo class. This will prevent you from hurting your foot and it will be a lot cooler for yourself and others. Moreover, the other judokas know that you have something wrong with your foot and that they have to be careful with it.

Your hair..

Long hair should be put in a braid or ponytail. This ensures that no one accidentally pulls your hair when they want to grab you and it ensures that your own hair does not hang in front of your eyes (this is a bit tricky judo)

Jewelry..

It is not allowed to wear jewelry during the judo lesson. Rings and watches often have sharp edges. You can easily hurt yourself and others with this. Necklaces and bracelets also break easily during a judo match. To avoid losing it, it's best to leave all your rings, necklaces and watches at home or put them in a locker at the gym.

The Judo belts and your judo suit.

The Japanese word for the judo belt you're wearing is OBI. There are different colors of belt to obtain, namely: The WHITE belt, the YELLOW belt, the ORANGE belt, the GREEN belt, the BLUE belt, the BROWN belt and the BLACK belt (your master has it). In addition to the tires, there are also skidding, these tires and skid you have to earn yourself and do your best for it.
By learning to understand the judo techniques, you can achieve belts or slips. You can earn these belts and slips on the judo exam. This exam is held 2 times a year. When you obtain a new color belt, you will receive your diploma. If you try extra hard, it can even happen that you earn one extra in between.

Your judo suit..

Your JUDOGI should always be clean. During the judo class you usually sweat because of the hard practice, make sure that when you get home you take your JUDOGI out of your bag to be able to air out. If you have sweated a lot or if your suit is dirty, you should of course have it washed immediately so that you are fresh on the mat the next time. And what you should definitely never forget is that you don't leave home in your JUDOGI but walk from the dressing room to the DOJO and you always have to wear your flip-flops or socks for HYGIENE.

In the locker room..

When you enter the locker room, you should behave calmly. Bullying other children is strictly forbidden, but talking loudly or shouting is certainly not one of them. Of course, you leave other people's belongings neatly lying down/hanging.

Before class..

Before the class starts, the large dojo is empty, it does not mean that you can start your judo/activities there. You wait quietly and neatly for the lesson to start. This way no one will be bothered by you and you will stick to the rules. Make sure you don't forget to use your pass before you start your lesson.

In the dojo..

Of course, you always have to behave properly in the DOJO. One of the most important things here is that you always listen carefully to your SENSEI (the judo master). Only then can you become a good judoka later on. At the beginning and at the end of the judo lesson, all children sit neatly in a row on the side of the mat to make a bow. This is the Japanese way of saying hello to everyone.

(behavioral) Rules

1 Don't hurt each other, don't bully, and don't argue.
2 Don't talk loudly at the same time (you won't hear your Master that way).
3 Don't just walk out of the DOJO (you have to ask your Master first).
4 Don't be late for class (this will cause you to miss important instructions and disturb the other judoka's).

Judoteam Burning Heart

For the performance-oriented students, The New Gentle Way also has a competition judo department called Judoteam Burning Heart. To be part of the competition-oriented group, you must meet a number of conditions. First of all, we want to see that you are always a good example in your own (regular) judo lessons. Keep in mind that children will look up to you if you have been chosen for the judo team. For the competition training you are always present, of course it can happen that you are sick or really can't, but cancelling because you don't feel like it, that is of course not possible. When you are selected for competitions, we assume that you will participate in them. The big talents who want (even) more can train extra at top judo utrecht, just ask master Stijn about it.
