Judo in the Maartensdijk region

Judo is called a martial art, but we see it more as a defense sport. During judo lessons in the Maartensdijk region, respect and fun are paramount. The lessons consist of several parts; fall breaking and judo techniques. The fall breaking is learning to fall, the judokas learn to fall on the mat without hurting themselves. They also learn many ground techniques and standing techniques. Learning holds and throws are definitely encountered in Burning Heart classes.

Judo is a sport in which there is so much to learn that children will not quickly get bored of it. We also organize regular exams. We do this to teach the judokas to set goals and achieve them, which naturally provides motivation and self-confidence.

Master Stijn and Master Jasper do not expect every child to have a judo suit right away. That will all come later! Everyone can just put on what they feel comfortable in.

Burning Heart reviews

What is judo?

Judo is originally a Japanese defense sport developed by Japanese Jigoro Kano. His goal was to develop a sport that posed no danger and would give great pleasure. Translated into Dutch, judo therefore means "the soft way. You use the opponent's strength to your own advantage. This means that you don't have to be physically stronger, you just have to be smarter and apply the right techniques. Self-control is central to judo.

History

Judo is originally a Japanese defense sport developed by Japanese man Jigoro Kano. Jigoro used to be a small and slender man who had a tough time. He was bullied a lot but never dared to do anything in return. When Jigoro was about 16, he started the sport of Jiu-Jitsu. He had heard that with BJJ you could learn how to beat a physically stronger opponent. Through the Jiu-Jitsu classes Jigoro took, he became physically stronger and improved his fitness, but most importantly, he became mentally stronger. Jigoro Kano began to stand up for himself.

Kano felt that Jiu-Jitsu had many good things going for it, yet he found that it could be harsh at times. He was often covered in Band-Aids and even got a nickname for this; "Bansoko" (the Band-Aid).

Kano thought things could be different. After much training, he came up with the sport of judo in 1882. Unlike Jiu-Jitsu, judo is not about beating your opponent, it is more like a game of how best to throw or control someone without injuring your opponent.

During judo, you learn to use your opponent's strength to overpower him or her. Respect is one of the most important aspects.
